Dennis, Natalie and Hutchinson ran out into the warm morning sunshine. The wreck of the jeep that Dennis had crashed was still smouldering at the wall. The two men he’d run over had been removed and their equipment retrieved. Natalie and Dennis were slightly ahead of Hutchinson as they sprinted for their jeep. Hutchinson stopped to get his breath. Dennis turned and stopped also. He started to go back.

“Pete what the hell are we running for? They’ll only catch us.”

“I think she’s bluffing. I don’t think she intends to kill us. She would have done it by now.”

They heard the engine on the Bell Huey start up. The rotor blades began to turn slowly. Natalie was at the jeep now and she jumped into the driver’s seat and started it up. She shoved the jeep into reverse and shot back straight into the jeep behind. She put her jeep into first and hit another one parked as she swung out of the parking space without a moment to lose. She screeched to a stop alongside Dennis and Hutchinson throwing open the passenger door.

“Get in!”

“Want me to drive?” Dennis asked.

“I’ve got it. Just give me directions.”

“Straight on here,” Hutchinson said, “Then go right, left and then straight.”

Natalie threw the jeep into a series of turns while Dennis watched frantically in the passenger door mirror.

“So you were saying Pete. About why we’re still alive.”

“It’s obvious isn’t it,” Dennis replied, “The box she has is the wrong one. It couldn’t have been the real one because Drake has his hand on it in a portrait. Therefore the Spanish didn’t salvage it four hundred years ago. As usual the Von Werner’s got it wrong again. Like they’ve got everything wrong to date.”

“So why are we still alive?”

“Because she knows that we’ll continue to search for it. It’s all a game of cat and mouse don’t you see. And unfortunately we’re the mouse.”

Natalie shot out of the village and onto the tarmac road.

“We need to be careful here,” Hutchinson said, “One wrong turn and we’re into a dead end.”

Dennis looked to the left and right of the tarmac road. One side was forest, the other fields of sugar cane and grass. He saw the first of the chasing jeeps round the bend behind and appear in the mirror.

“Shit! Here they come.”

He reached over for the steering wheel and pulled it towards himself.

“Get off the road.”

The jeep bounced and bucked as Natalie left the road and shot off into the forest. The chasing jeeps following. There were three of them and to Dennis’ horror they appeared to be gaining, despite the speed Natalie was driving at. To his right Dennis saw the Bell Huey through the trees. It was flying along the road and overtaking them, unable to do the jeep’s slow speed. Natalie had the vehicle up to sixty miles an hour at times as they bounced and jarred their way through the forest. Dennis climbed over the passenger seat and into the back. The jeep had a canvas canopy acting as a roof with glass windows in it.
